One of the most important documents is the maritime identity card. The shipowner organizes and pays for the seafarer to receive such documents, as well as for the seafarer’s flight to the ship and his return home.

How to get a job on a ship operating under a foreign flag? A seafarer does not have to appear for an interview in another country: everything is done over the phone. But in order to obtain a license from the flag country for the right to work, candidates for a place on a ship sometimes have to fly and take exam in English to the country issuing the document.

At first, when there is not enough work experience, crewing companies offer contracts lasting up to 9-10 months. Sometimes the shipowner enters into a permanent contract with the seaman. In foreign companies, seafarers most often work on temporary contracts.

European and American companies offer higher salaries to experienced sailors. The salary of a Russian senior mechanic, for example, can be $500 per day for a contract duration of 6 weeks. On the same ship, the salary of an assistant cook from Nepal is only $200 per month with a contract duration of 2 years. In a sense, the seaman does not choose where to work, because the same ship can transport cargo both between several specific ports according to a predetermined schedule (this is called liner shipping or line work), and between different ports, changing at each new cargo (this is called tramp shipping, from the English word tramp - tramp).

Work and rest

A sailor is more a way of life than a profession. A person who begins a maritime career becomes truly dependent on it.
